Importing models

When you start up ActiveVOS Designer for Business Analysts, the editor displays a blank diagram. You can create a model from a blank diagram or import a diagram from an existing BPEL (versions 1.1 and 2.0) source or Visio diagram (must have Visio installed to import a VSD drawing). Using ActiveVOS Designer, you can also import Rational Rose, UML2, and XPDL activity diagrams.

To import a process model into ActiveVOS Designer and ActiveVOS Designer for Business Analysts:

  1. Select File->New->Business Process Model.
  2. Select the destination folder. Note: If this option is not available, you need to cancel the process and create a project first (any kind of project, including a simulation project), then start again.
  3. Type in a file name.
  4. Select a “source”—the type of drawing or diagram to import. Click Next.
  5. Browse to find the file you want to import and select it.
  6. For BPEL files, you can also import related WSDL files using the same window.

Additional elements

The diagram is only part of the model. Additional information can be included with the diagram—documentation, additional properties, imported web services, etc.—that increase the model’s value to the organization. Some of that information can be added by a business analyst; more technical information may have to be provided by the technologist.
